The Inspector General of Police has once again issued a strict directive, emphasizing a ban on Nigerian police officers from posting photographs of themselves in uniform on social media. This renewed order also prohibits the sharing of official police documents online and strictly warns against officers carrying bags or umbrellas for Very Important Persons (VIPs).
According to a confidential wireless message dated May 3, 2025—exclusively obtained by SaharaReporters—the directive was communicated to all personnel of the Police Mobile Force, No. 13PMF Squadron, Makurdi, Benue State. The internal memo was signed by ACP Hassan S. Aliyu, Commanding Officer of the squadron.
It reads:
“The Inspector General of Police has reiterated his warning on NPF Social Media Policy and further directs that, on no account, should any police personnel use his or her uniform picture on any social media. He further warns that any official documents are also prohibited from being published on social media, while those attached to VIPs are warned not to carry any VIP’s luggage (bags) or umbrellas. Any disobedience to these directives will be viewed with severe sanction.”
This directive is being reemphasized amid increasing public scrutiny of the Nigerian Police Force’s conduct on social media. In recent times, several photos and videos have emerged showing officers in undignified or subservient positions, particularly when attached to political figures or high-profile individuals.
One such incident that drew public attention was a viral video where Mobile Police (MOPOL) officers assigned to a Chinese mining company were seen accepting cash gifts from foreign nationals. The footage showed a Chinese man distributing ₦5,000 each to multiple officers in uniform, with a woman and a young girl—believed to be members of his family—also handing out money.
While the incident raised concerns about the integrity of the police, the Nigerian Police later clarified that the money was presented as a token of appreciation and not a bribe.
This latest reaffirmation of policy underscores the Nigeria Police Force’s ongoing efforts to uphold professionalism, integrity, and the dignity of its officers, especially in public and online spaces.
