Tragedy struck again in Enugu State as unknown gunmen, suspected to be armed robbers, launched a deadly assault on a police checkpoint in Agbogugu, killing two officers and torching two vehicles.
The BREAKING: Gunmen Kill Two Police Officers, Burn Two Vehicles In Enugu Checkpoint Attack unfolded on Thursday evening along the Enugu-Ozalla-Port Harcourt Old Road, in the Awgu Local Government Area. Eyewitnesses who spoke to SaharaReporters on Friday described the scene as horrifying.
According to reports, the assailants set ablaze a police patrol van and a Sienna vehicle used by officers for checkpoint duties. They also seized the slain officers’ weapons before escaping through Agbogugu town without resistance.
One eyewitness, speaking anonymously, revealed that the two officers killed included the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) and another known locally as “Big.” “Yesterday evening, gunmen suspected to be armed robbers attacked a police checkpoint in Agbogugu, killing two officers and burning two vehicles,” the eyewitness recounted.
The attackers, undeterred, calmly exited the scene, heightening tensions in the area. Law enforcement officers from Enugu later arrived and evacuated the charred vehicles.
In recent months, Enugu State—particularly the Enugu North Senatorial District—has witnessed a troubling spike in violent attacks, including targeted killings of police personnel.
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, for an official response were unsuccessful, as calls and text messages went unanswered.
