
The Nigerian Army under Operation UDO KA has reportedly dismantled a suspected Eastern Security Network (ESN) camp in Ugwunagbo Local Government Area, Abia State. The high-profile raid led to the recovery of weapons, cash, and other items, but also resulted in the death of one soldier.
According to a special situation report (SITREP) from 144 Battalion (Rear) obtained by SaharaReporters, the operation was launched in the early hours of May 23, 2025, following actionable intelligence on the presence of an ESN stronghold in the Ebubengwa/Abayi Nchokoro community.
The signal revealed that the raid involved six platoons of 49 soldiers each, led by the unit commander. The troops were supported by one Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), a gun truck, and six Hilux vehicles.
The operation resulted in the complete dislodgement and destruction of the ESN camp. Items recovered included:
- 1 Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG)
- 1 General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG)
- 4 AK-47 rifles
- 1 G3 rifle
- 3 Pump action guns
- 800 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition
- 648 rounds of 7.62mm NATO rounds
- 2 generators
- Laptops, CCTV cameras, mobile phones, Wi-Fi router, external hard drives
- Food supplies and ritual vests
- ₦11.75 million and $27,000 in cash
Additionally, troops discovered and destroyed a large shrine used for spiritual activities. Several vehicles and motorcycles were also destroyed, including:
- 1 Honda Pilot SUV
- 2 Toyota Highlander SUVs
- 1 Toyota Hiace bus
- 1 Mini bus
- 1 Tricycle
- 2 Motorcycles
During the fierce gunfight, the militants were reportedly forced into disarray, leaving behind blood trails. However, the exact number of casualties on the militants’ side remains unconfirmed.
The Nigerian Army reported the loss of one soldier and two wounded personnel—one officer and one soldier. The deceased soldier’s body has been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, while the injured are receiving treatment at a medical facility in Aba.
Troops expended 630 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and 235 rounds of 12.7mm rounds during the engagement.
The Nigerian Army confirmed that the area has been secured and cleared, with patrols ongoing to maintain dominance.
