The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has revealed that all three senators from Kebbi State elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are set to officially defect to the APC.
Ganduje made this announcement on Friday while briefing State House correspondents after a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He was accompanied by Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State, along with the three senators in question — Adamu Aliero, Yahaya Abdullahi, and Garba Maidoki.
According to Ganduje, the planned defection follows a series of intense discussions among major political stakeholders in Kebbi. He confirmed that a mutual agreement was reached for the senators to cross over to the ruling party.
“This is a good development and aligns with the political trend in Nigeria today,” Ganduje said. “Almost every week, we witness members from opposition parties in both the Senate and the House of Representatives joining the APC.”
Ganduje noted that the purpose of the meeting with President Tinubu was to receive his blessing for this significant political shift — a blessing the President has now given. “By Tuesday, you will witness what will happen on the floor of the Red Chamber,” Ganduje hinted.
He also dismissed concerns about Nigeria becoming a one-party state. “We’re not advocating for a one-party system,” he clarified. “But if Nigerians express confidence in APC by joining in large numbers, we cannot object to their will.”
Using a popular analogy, he added, “Too many cooks spoil the soup; similarly, too many political parties can hinder effective governance.”
Ganduje emphasized that the move is in line with President Tinubu’s broader vision to strengthen the APC across all fronts. “We must continue growing in numbers, quality, and national appeal — democratically.”
With the expected defection, APC’s influence in the Senate is poised for another major boost.
